Harvesting
the Seeds
Willow Design & Publishing's associate wildflower seed house
is Design By Nature. Their nursery is situated on the Castlecomer
plateau at 1,000 feet above sea level where they grow Hardy Native
Stock that is naturally pest & disease free. Design by nature
can lift their plants off their mulches well into early summer,
(their spring on the hilltop) and also lift them in early autumn
so that the stock can be planted when the weather and soil are warm.
Design
By Nature do not use fertilisers or pesticides and use very little
weed killer except for clearing pathways or to disturb grassy
ground. They have even attracted the Corncrake back to their locality
as well as encourage new butterfly species to the area.
260
species of wildflower seed and plants are produced for sale from
production cycles lasting five years. Where we make seed available
we try to market each species fresh from the previous or current
years harvest. Due to lack of demand for certain species, some
seed may have been stored for up to 4 years.
